30 Days Of Character Building
After the last game we played in the SoIaF Podcast I felt that Hoster has started to grow, become something more than a two dimensional character. He now has reasons for his feelings and idiosyncrasies that make him real.
So to aid in his development I decided to spend some time each day for 30 days developing him out of game.
Day 1: Parental Relations
This is a loaded question, especially for Hoster’s family. Lets start with the head of the household, his father, Edric.
Once there was a time when they were close, as second sons usually are to their fathers. However, the untimely death of Hoster’s mother at the hands of bandits lead to a rift that never fully healed. Edric never forgave himself and his lack of action and grew distant, neglecting his sons and their lands. Hoster never forgave him nor himself for not being there to save her, letting out his anger through training and fighting. Now, they are constantly as odds, each favoring different methods of action. Edric, a man of words, preferring to use political weight rather than Hoster’s swords.
Hoster and his mother were very close, he saw her as the lynch pin of the family. Acting as wise counsel and caring matriarch. Often, after one of Hoster’s boyish pranks would inevitably go wrong she would be there to help pick up the pieces and dispense wise words. His father, however, would merely roll his eyes and grumble about his actions at court being unseemly. She died when Hoster was away, only receiving the dark words once he returned. He stood vigil over her grave for seven days and seven nights with out food or drink to honor her death. It was during that time that he swore that no harm would come to a woman again.
